Florida's Art Museums' Most Exciting Exhibitions in 2013

DELRAY BEACH CENTER FOR THE ARTS presents ‘Seagate Hotel & Spa World of Golf: The Gary Wiren Collection, ‘one of the most unique private collections of golf memorabilia in the United States, and oils, watercolors and acrylics by America's most highly recognized golf artists, from the Academy of Golf Art, on display in the Cornell Museum of Art & American Culture thru April 21. Presented as part of a Shakespeare Festival, THE DALI MUSEUM’s ‘Much Ado About Shakespeare’ exhibition will feature 31 drypoint engravings by Salvador Dalí inspired by the works of William Shakespeare and two illustrated books in which Shakespeare's most celebrated works are reimagined by the artist (‘Macbeth,’ featuring illustrations and reproductions, and ‘As You Like It’, featuring drawings of costumes and sets for a 1949 stage production). FLORIDA MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS presents ‘Chuck Close: A Couple Ways of Doing Something’ January 31 – March 31. The exhibition features fifteen of Chuck Close’s delicately intimate daguerreotypes paired with Bob Holman’s witty and beautifully typeset poems. The exhibition also includes examples of Close’s other works taken from each daguerreotype in a variety of media, including tapestries and photogravures. The MUSEUM OF FLORIDA ART presents ‘Duane Hanson: Sculpture And Photographs 1978-1995,’ thru April 7. The exhibition of haunting lifelike sculptures by arguably the greatest realist sculptor of the 20th century features ten of Hanson’s extraordinary sculptures, ranging from works in the 1970's of his children to classic 1980's sculptures of working class figures. The exhibition is accompanied by 75 ‘unknown’ Kodak and Polaroid instant prints intended as visual assists during the making of his sculpture. Museum of Florida Art is located at 600 N. The TAMPA MUSEUM OF ART will host ‘To See as Artists See: American,' February 2 – April 28. The exhibition of American masterpieces from The Phillips Collection presents 105 paintings by 75 artists that trace the course of American painting from the 1850s–1960s, including works by Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Thomas Eakins, Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. The MENNELLO MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART presents ‘Eugene Savage: The Seminole Paintings,’ the most extensive painted record of the Florida Seminoles from the early 20th century, September 1 – December 29. The POLK MUSEUM OF ART presents ‘Coincidence: Works by Louviere+Vanessa,’ January 19 – April 20. Jeff Louviere and Vanessa Brown strive to expand the experimental properties of photography, using such alternative materials as gold leaf, Super 8mm film, and even blood.
